March 21 - Due to the recent passing of Alan Marlatt, Dr. Dennis Daley will provide the Keynote Address.

About Dennis C. Daley, PhD, LSW

Dr. Daley is Chief of Addiction Medicine Services and Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC). Dr. Daley has been involved in managing and providing treatment services for alcohol and drug problems, psychiatric disorders and co-occurring disorders for over three decades.  He currently oversees a large continuum of treatment, prevention, research and training programs at WPIC. 

Dr. Daley was one of the first in the U.S. to develop clinical programs and recovery materials on relapse prevention (RP). He collaborated with Dr. G. Alan Marlatt on numerous publications over the years to promote RP.  He and colleagues were one of the first groups in the U.S. to develop integrated treatment programs for co-occurring disorders. His co-occurring disorders treatment model and recovery materials are used in many programs in the U.S. and other countries.

Dr. Daley has been involved in clinical research for 20 years.  He is currently Principle Investigator of the Appalachian Tri-State Node of the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s Clinical Trials Network project.  He has been or is currently an investigator on many NIDA or NIAAA funded clinical trials of treatment of addiction or co-occurring disorders.  Dr. Daley has been a consultant and trainer on many federally funded research projects including three at McLean Hospital of Harvard Medical School.     

He is Co-Director of the Education Core of the VISN 4 Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Care (MIRECC) project, a joint venture between the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia VA Health Care Systems. Dr. Daley has presented over 400 workshops, lectures and training seminars in the U.S., Canada and Europe.   

Dr. Daley has over 260 publications, including treatment manuals, family and client educational books, workbooks and videos on recovery from substance use, psychiatric disorders or co-occurring disorders.   His most recent books include Group Treatment of Addiction and Relapse Prevention Counseling.  He was the first professional in the U.S. to publish an interactive workbook on RP and one of the first to write a book for clinicians on RP. Dr. Daley’s treatment models and recovery materials are used in numerous programs throughout the U.S. and other countries.  Several of his works have been translated to foreign languages.

Dr. Alan Marlatt
"Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention in the Treatment of Addictive Behaviors"

Dr. Alan Marlatt is Professor of Psychology and Director, Addictive Behaviors Research Center, Department of Psychology, University of Washington.  He received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Indiana University in 1968.  He has conducted pioneering research in the areas of harm reduction, brief interventions and relapse prevention.   In addition to over 200 journal articles and book chapters, Dr. Marlatt has published several books in the addiction field including Relapse Prevention (1985; 2005), Assessment of Addictive Behaviors (1988; 2005), Harm Reduction (1998), Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS): A Harm Reduction Approach (1999), and most recently, Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention for Addictive Behaviors: A Clinician’s Guide (2010).
