p.m. PHILADELPHIA
THE ADDICTED BRAIN & ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURY: A DOUBLE OBSTACLE TO RECOVERYThis training will teach participants the mechanisms of
addiction within the brain, how it can become impaired as the substance abuser
continues to use, and how treatment professionals can use their knowledge of the
brain and brain injury to make treatment more effective. In the first half of
the presentation, addictionologist Dr. Chris Davis will provide a thorough and
easy-to-understand introduction to the brain and discuss the neurobiology of
addiction. He will focus on the reward pathway, changes in the frontal lobe,
receptors, neurotransmitters, and neural pathways that are most involved in the
addiction process. In the second half, rehabilitation counselor Catherine
Getchell will review the many ways in which the brain can become injured during
the course of an addiction and discuss the unique treatment needs and effective
treatment strategies for working with this complex population. The training
will combine review of material by the presenters with active discussion among
participants and presenters. Participants will finish the day by working on
case studies so they can implement the knowledge and skills gained during the
training. Friday, November 19, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
PITTSBURGHMOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING FOR TREATMENT OF SUBSTANCE DISORDERSMotivational interviewing is a research supported
evidence-based approach to addressing many of the difficulties that arise in the
treatment of substance disorder clients. The participants in the training will
learn a valuable skill set for the treatment of individuals who desire help to
move in the direction of change. They will learn to identify the five stages of
change: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation for action, implementing
the plan, and maintaining the change. Participants will learn various
interventions that are appropriate for each change and will practice
interventions in staged counseling interviews. Friday, November 12, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. EFFECTIVE AFTERCARE PLANNING FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSING JUVENILE JUSTICE CLIENTSEffective aftercare planning is essential to the well-being
of any client completing inpatient drug and alcohol treatment. Aftercare can
also be more challenging than anticipated as barriers to follow through are ever
present. These barriers include limited access due to insurance eligibility,
waiting lists at the outpatient level of care, transportation concerns, and lack
of willingness on the part of the client to engage in aftercare services. These
barriers are certainly present for the juvenile justice client. This training
will focus on working effectively across systems to ensure the best possible
aftercare for the substance abusing juvenile justice client as he/she
transitions from inpatient treatment. Involvement with probation will be framed
as an advantage which provides opportunities for increased support in the
community. Specific strategies will be discussed that assist in developing
productive working relationships with juvenile probation officers. Common
situations and potential barriers will be used as case studies and participants
will become involved in discussion focused on problem-solving in the best
interest of the client. Exploration of ways to address client motivation and
increase willingness to follow through on aftercare recommendations will also be
discussed. Friday, November 19, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
