This is an “ON CALL” part-time position in which a Recovery Support Specialist responds to hotline calls from the medical staff at Penn State Health-St. Joseph’s Hospital Emergency Department. The primary role is to act as liaison and peer support in connecting patients to detoxification, residential, or outpatient and/or medication assisted treatment (MAT) services. The primary population to be served includes opiate overdose survivors, individuals presenting in severe opiate withdrawal, or any patient identified by medical staff as exhibiting signs and/or symptoms of a possible substance use disorder (SUD).

Staff working in this position are classified as “Essential,” as consistent and timely attendance is paramount to the success of the Warm Hand-Off (WHO) program. “Essential” staff are expected to adhere to all TASC policies pertaining to Liberal Leave, attendance, and PTO. Failure to abide by these policies may lead to disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
(includes, but is not limited to, the following):

• Answers consult requests from hospital personnel and meets with opiate overdose survivors, patients presenting symptoms of opiate withdrawal, and patients identified with a presumptive substance use disorder (SUD).
• Utilizes Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques and discusses treatment and recovery options with each patient, providing support, encouragement, and hope.
• Conducts bed searches and secures admission into detoxification and/or residential treatment services for patients expressing a desire for help.
• Forwards all required admission criteria to treatment providers and secures placement and transportation for the patient.
• Enters timely and thorough documentation into CPR-Web as appropriate.
• Provides follow-up information to TASC and COCA as required.
• Provides substance abuse and treatment resource information, including information regarding Recovery Support Services, to patients and family members as requested.
• Maintains strict adherence to confidentiality requirements and ethical standards during interactions with all clients, family members and significant others, attorneys, case workers, and referral sources.
• Attends all meetings, conferences, and trainings as they relate to job functions.
• Maintains and develops drug and alcohol professional knowledge by attending required trainings, workshops, seminars, conferences, etc.
• Completes and maintains CRS certification.
• Represents TASC in a positive and professional manner at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

 High School Diploma or GED
 Certification from the Pennsylvania Certification Board (PCB) as a Certified Recovery Specialist (CRS). (Must be obtained within 6 months of the date of hire, if candidate does not have current credentials.)
 Adheres to all applicable federal and state laws and regulation including, but not limited to, confidentiality, anti-fraud, and documentation standards.
 Ability to effectively communicate with clients, staff, referral sources, treatment facilities and community agencies. Strong interpersonal skills.
 Superior customer service skills, demonstrated responsiveness, depth of knowledge and thoroughness in handling and responding to clients and staff members.
 Strong organizational skills, self-motivated, and ability to prioritize workload.
 Proficient computer skills and solid knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.)

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to ten (10) pounds and may infrequently lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Specific vision abilities required of this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and peripheral vision.

• Requires current Criminal Background and Child Abuse clearances.
• Requires a post-offer, pre-employment drug screen.
