Gaudenzia is looking to immediately hire Substance Abuse Counselors at multiple locations including Philadelphia, Norristown, West Chester, Wilmington, Coatesville, Bristol, Lancaster and Harrisburg areas!
Substance Abuse Counselors are responsible for planning and of conducting therapeutic activities for both individuals and groups within the program. They also counsel clients on an individual and group basis, and must have a significant to advanced understanding of how therapeutic programs operate and how clients progress through the treatment system and full continuum of care.
Duties may include, but are not limited to carrying out tasks in the therapeutic care, treatment, and rehabilitation of persons with substance use disorder(s) and/or mental health diagnoses; facilitating and supervising individual and group counseling; working with social service agencies, managed care organizations, hospitals, clinics, courts, prisons and other entities in coordinating client care; assisting clients in their access and utilization of community resources; preparing treatment plans, biopsychosocial histories, discharge/ aftercare plans, reports and maintaining accurate records; encouraging, reassuring and giving needed support; recommending educational and occupational training and/or possibilities for placement; and completing assessments and evaluations based on appropriate ASAM criteria.
Work is performed in accordance with established regulations, and policies and procedures; however, employees are expected to exercise significant initiative and independent judgment in discharging duties. Work is reviewed by the Program Director and/or Clinical Supervisor through an evaluation of the completion of assignments through individual and group supervision.

Attend all team / staff meetings as required by Program Director.

Be responsible for a caseload of clients, as identified by program requirements and in accordance with state regulations.
Complete required evaluations and assessments, including clinical assessments and biopsychosocial histories, in accordance with established program guidelines.
Complete individual treatment plans upon clients’ admission, in accordance with established program guideline.
Document all clinical interventions performed within client’s electronic record, and complete monthly treatment reports.
Maintain accurate electronic records on each client and ensure the timely completion of tasks in accordance with established program guidelines and level of care requirements.
Conduct individual and group sessions based on clients’ level of care and state regulations.
Attend, participate, and when necessary, assist in the facilitation of special events, such as retreats and trips.
Moderate special groups and meetings, including family meetings and workshops.
Attend court hearings with clients.
Monitor client progress and adjust treatment plans as needed.
Coordinate with agency and community resources to ensure a thorough treatment plan.
Assist clients with connecting to resources needed to reach personal goals both during the course of treatment and in advance of their discharge.
Assist clients in developing a thorough discharge plan addressing their most salient needs and maintain contact with clients after discharge until they have been established with other case management/social services.
Ensure collection and documentation of urinalysis/ drug screening samples to ensure compliance with treatment requirements.
Delaware Education/ Licensure Requirements:
Counselor I: Must possess full certification as certified alcohol and drug counselor (CADC) in the state of Delaware, or possess full certification by a nationally recognized body in addictions counseling, or possess at least five (5) years’ clinical experience working in the field of SUD treatment.
Counselor II: May be a student enrolled in a course of study while completing a practicum or internship; or be an individual working toward full certification in addictions counseling by the Delaware Certification Board or nationally recognized certification organization. Must receive one (1) hour of clinical supervision by clinical supervisor for every twenty (20) hours.
Maryland Education/ Licensure Requirements:
The following licensure is required: Master’s degree and LCADC or Bachelor’s degree with CAC-AD with supervisor’s letter from the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists
Pennsylvania Education/ Licensure Requirements:
Counselor I: Associate’s Degree with two (2) years’ clinical experience; or Bachelor’s degree with one (1) year clinical experience.
Counselor II: Associate’s Degree with three (3) years’ clinical experience; or Bachelor’s degree with two (2) years’ clinical experience.
Counselor III: Bachelor’s degree with three (3) years’ clinical experience; Master’s degree in social work, psychology, chemical dependency, counseling or nursing with no experience required; or Master’s degree in related field requires one (1) year of experience.
Commensurate with education, training, and/ or experience, individuals hired for Counselor I position should demonstrate thorough knowledge and ability; individuals hired for Counselor II position should demonstrate significant knowledge and ability; and individuals hired for Counselor III position should demonstrate advanced knowledge and ability of the following:
Significant to advanced knowledge of the principles, philosophies, practices, and procedures of Gaudenzia’s treatment programs.
Significant to advanced knowledge of the biopsychosocial characteristics and maladaptive behaviors of chemical dependency and/or mental illness.
Significant to advanced knowledge of individual and group behavior and the effective ways of working with people to produce ongoing recovery.
Significant to advanced ability to engage with individuals and groups in a therapeutic process and engage in therapeutic alliance to advance treatment goals.
Ability to work effectively with people and aid them in adjusting to their specific challenges.
Ability to identify the needs of clients and to gain their confidence and cooperation in assisting them to obtain their identified goals.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, other members of staff, outside agencies, institutions and the general public.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to successfully work with others from various cultures and backgrounds.
Ability to organize a caseload and an extensive informational system.
Computer skills, including familiarity and faculty with Microsoft Office programs like Word and Excel.
Significant to advanced knowledge of facility and/or levels, their primary functions, and an understanding of why residents move from one level to another.
Maintain valid license and appropriate professional certificates and credentials.
Be able to work at least one evening (12 PM to 8 PM) per week and occasional weekends, as needed.
