The Prevention Specialist provides addiction prevention services for children, youth and adults throughout Lancaster County. This includes offering information and referral assistance for individuals seeking resources and treatment options, as well as providing ongoing support for Compass Mark programs serving families and children such as Family Services Advocate and Future Generations. In addition, the Prevention Specialist represents Compass Mark at community events and supports the logistical needs of on-site Department of Drug and Alcohol trainings.
Information and Referral
• Maintain current knowledge about alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and gambling (ATODG), including the unique needs and risk factors of individuals experiencing addiction in Lancaster County.
• Apply prevention theories and best practices to all aspects of duties and follow program-specific protocols.
• Provide resources, information, and referral services to community members.
• Provide case management support duties as outlined by supervisor; may carry a small caseload not to exceed 8 at any given time.
• Answer information and referral calls for community services related to treatment, detox, support, or problem identification as trained, and connect individuals to resources and services appropriate to their needs.
• Record individual Information and Referral client contacts accurately as directed for reporting to the statewide prevention services database.
Training and Education
• Develop and facilitate family education services, in coordination with other staff, within family serving programs.
• Complete timely and accurate documentation of all services provided according to state and county reporting requirements.
• Complete host-agency requirements for PA Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP) on-site trainings.
• Attend community events as a representative of Compass Mark, including speaking engagements and health fairs, to distribute prevention information and resources.
• Develop and submit monthly report to Supervisor as required.
• Support the mission of Compass Mark in the community and adhere to the agency’s core values.

Education & Skills: Bachelor’s degree in Education or a Human Service discipline, or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. Must have at least 3 years of experience providing addiction treatment/prevention programs, case management, or information and referral services. Must have a working knowledge and experience with software programs including MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, & PowerPoint). Bi-Lingual fluency (Spanish / English) preferred.
Qualities: Strong organizational skills and capacity to manage multiple projects; Ability to work in a multicultural and diverse environment; Detail-oriented; Commitment to high professional ethical standards; Able to work independently and make critical decisions utilizing prevention best practices.
Language & Reasoning: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret information. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, including being able to create written reports and respond to questions. Ability to solve practical problems and interpret a variety of instructions in written and oral form.
Travel: Employee must have willingness to travel and access to reliable transportation. The employee must also possess a valid driver’s license and required vehicle insurance.
Work Environment and Physical Demands: The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Other abilities required by this job include the ability to adjust focus, concentrate for extended periods of time, and talk and hear. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
