A dynamic, internally motivated professional responsible for performing direct client care, client documentation and support services. Additionally, the counselor directly manages a client caseload with the supervision of the clinical supervisor and Program Director. The counselor completes treatment planning, continuing care, and after-care plans, as well as performs group therapy, individual sessions, lectures, and workshops. The counselor is responsible for maintaining compliance with departmental and program standards at the direction of the clinical supervisor. The counselor will act as a productive member of the integrated treatment team, including facilitating group and individual therapy, as well as psycho-educational lectures and presentations.

Knowledge of addiction, clinical assessment methods, individual and group therapy techniques, as well as knowledge of outpatient treatment programs and dynamics is required. Good facilitation skills, and the ability to participate as an effective team member required. Understanding of human behavior within the process required to facilitate change. Excellent writing skills as well as the ability to produce comprehensive documentation. Must have excellent skills in verbal communication, good organization, and time management skills, as well as familiarity with, and competency in, using personal computer applications. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff, clients, outside agencies, families, visitors, and the community is required.

Responsibilities

- Facilitate group and individual therapy sessions, lectures, and workshops.
- Complete clinical assessments and treatment plans.

Qualifications

Education and experience requirements must meet any of the following, according to 28 PA Code § 704.7:

 A Master’s Degree or above from an accredited college in a relevant field and 6 months of clinical experience in a health or human service agency.
 Current licensure in this Commonwealth as a physician.
 A Master’s Degree or above from an accredited college with a major in chemical dependency, psychology, social work, counseling, nursing (with a clinical specialty in the human services) or other related field which includes a practicum in a health or human service agency, preferably in a drug and alcohol setting. If the practicum did not take place in a drug and alcohol setting, the individual’s written training plan shall specifically address a plan to achieve counseling competency in chemical dependency issues.
 A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college with a major in chemical dependency, psychology, social work, counseling, nursing (with a clinical specialty in the human services) or other related field and 1 year of clinical experience (a minimum of 1,820 hours) in a health or human service agency, preferably in a drug and alcohol setting. If a person’s experience did not take place in a drug and alcohol setting, the individual’s written training plan shall specifically address a plan to achieve counseling competency in chemical dependency issues.
 An Associate Degree from an accredited college with a major in chemical dependency, psychology, social work, counseling, nursing (with a clinical specialty in the human services) or other related field and 2 years of clinical experience (a minimum of 3,640 hours) in a health or human service agency, preferably in a drug and alcohol setting. If a person’s experience was not in a drug and alcohol setting, the individual’s written training plan shall specifically address a plan to achieve counseling competency in chemical dependency issues.
 Current licensure in this Commonwealth as a registered nurse and a degree from an accredited school of nursing and 1 year of counseling experience (a minimum of 1,820 hours) in a health or human service agency, preferably in a drug and alcohol setting. If a person’s experience was not in a drug and alcohol setting, the individual’s written training plan shall specifically address a plan to achieve counseling competency in chemical dependency issues.
 Full certification as an addictions counselor by a statewide certification body which is a member of a National certification body or certification by another state government’s substance abuse counseling certification board.
