This position is located in the community at large and serves the Penn State St. Joseph’s Hospital Emergency Department. The primary role is to act as a liaison to connect patients to detoxification, rehab, or MAT outpatient services, provide support and education to the patient and his/her loved ones, and provide encouragement, coaching, and recovery information to the patient. Primary population served will be opiate overdose survivors; secondary population served will be patients presenting in opiate withdrawal; tertiary population served will be any patient presenting with a substance use disorder. This is a peer support role. Staff will interface professionally with medical and social work staff.

Responsibilities

• Answer all incoming calls from the WHO Hotline
• Respond to calls in-person within 30 minutes
• Meet with all opiate overdose survivors and their presenting loved ones
• Meet with patients presenting with substance use disorders, when requested by hospital staff
• Provide support, encouragement, hope, substance use disorder information, and resource information to patients, families, and hospital staff
• Obtain patient information and consents/releases
• Conduct bed searches for possible admission into detoxification or residential treatment facilities
• Fax information to providers, as requested
• Schedule transportation to detox/rehab
• Provide facility information to patient and presenting loved ones
• If client is medically cleared and cooperative, may transport to TASC offices during business hours for detox placement
• Enter all required data into CPR-Web
• Fax RSS referral forms, consents, and additional WHO paperwork to TASC daily
• Interface with hospital staff professionally at all times
• Provide follow up information to Client Services Supervisor and/or Executive Director

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED, minimum
• Active CRS (Certified Recovery Specialist) credentials from PCB (PA Certification Board)
• 3+ years of continuous sobriety/identifying as being in long-term recovery from a substance use disorder
• Valid/active PA Driver’s license and daily access to insured automobile
• Ability to use a laptop, fax machine, and type

Payment:
• $50/day (24 hours shift; 3p-3p); $25 per hour for all calls/community work; mileage paid at IRS rate
